How to restore the xPortalNet database to a new PC? (.bak file format)

This article contains steps to restore the xPortalNet database from old PC to the new PC using existing backup files (.bak file format).

Applies To:

  • Software xPortalNet v1.5

› Using new machine/ PC, new database is initialized.
 Same PC, re-installation of software and new database is initialized.          


Caution! Modifying database will affect the software behavior. Only perform this steps if you are familiar with the SQL database otherwise kindly request from your IT Technician for help.

To restore the xPortalNet database, please follow the steps below. Please follow all steps in right sequence order.

» This restore database steps also applicable for restore transaction database with .bak file format only.      
  1. Initialize new database in new machine. See AA-00291 to learn how to initialize new database using xPortalNet.
  2. After database successfully initialized, make sure xPortalNet software is not running. 
  3. Exit the Service, Server and Client completely.
  4. Open SQL Server Management Studio.

  5. The Connect to Server pop up window will be shown. Enter the Login ID and Password. Then click Connect.

    » The Login ID (Instance ID) and Password is created during Microsoft SQL Server 2008 installation. See AA-00290 for the installation step.     
  6. At the top left side menu, find the Databases folder and click the plus sign to expand the folder.

  7. You should found the XPNDB and XPNTR folder after expanding the Databases folder.

    › If you notice the XPNTR folder shown is different, it is because the Transaction database is according to the month you initialized the xPortalNet database. 

  8. To restore the database, right click the XPNDB folder. Select Tasks › Restore › Database.

  9. The Restore Database – XPNDB window will be shown as following. 
    1. Make sure the Destination for restore is selected To database: XPNDB.
    2. For the Source for restore, select From device then browse the back up database file.

  10. Click Add to browse the back up database file.

  11. Select the location of the back up database file. Click OK.

  12. Please confirm your back up file location.
  13. Click OK to continue.

  14. Tick the database that you wish to restore.
  15. At the top left of the windows, select Options page.

  16. At the Restore options section, tick the option Overwrite the existing database (WITH REPLACE).
  17. Click OK to start restore the back up database.

  18. You should see this pop-up window when the restore of database is completed. Click OK to finish.

  19. Restore database is completed.
