How to configure the XP-GT/ XP-GTR controller using RS485/ RS232 connection?

This article contains steps to setup the connection for XP-GT/ XP-GTR controller using RS485/ RS232. The communication shall up between the controller and the xPortal software after completed the setup.

  • XP-GT1200L, XP-GT3200L, XP-GT1200LABX/ XP-GT3200LABX, XP-GT3200LE, XP-GT3200LCPX, XP-GT500LE, XP-GTR1200L, XP-GTR3200L 
  • Software xPortal2005 v1.2 and above, xPortal2007, xPortalNet, xPortal3000    
 Resolution Summary
 

To configure the XP-GT/ XP-GTR controller model using Direct Serial Port (RS485/ RS232) connection, you are required to connect the controller to the RS485 (MCI)/ RS232 cable. After configuring the wiring connection, please configure to allow the software to communicate through Windows Firewall.

Then, configure the address of the controller. This address must be unique from the other controller across the same network. Next step, complete the controller configuration which consists of Connection Setup, Controller Setup and Door Setup. Finish the configuration by Download Door Setting to the controller.

Please complete the following steps:


Perform the following steps before you proceed to configure the network connection.

  1. Please configure to allow the software through Windows Firewall. Follow steps from this article. small Allow apps to communicate through Windows Firewall.
  2. Verify the wiring connection is correct. See this article small Wiring connection diagram for XP-GT/ XP-GTR.


  1. Set the Address for the controller. Enter to the Programming Menu › System Menu › General Parameter.
  2. The address set in the controller must be unique and does not same Address Unit No. with other controllers.

Connection Setup

  1. Check the Comm Port No. where the MCI is connected is available and shown in the PC's Device Manager.
  2. Run Windows Device Manager. Right-click at My Computer › Select "Manage".


  3. Computer Management Window will pop out. Select "Device Manager"› Select "Ports (COM & LPT)".

    If the MCI is connected to Server PC using CPU’s direct serial port (RS232 cable):


    If the MCI is connected to Server PC using USB-to-Serial port (RS485 cable):


  4. Login to xPortal Server and configure following setup.
  5. Open Connection Setup. Go to Server Admin › Connection Setup.
  6. Add one connection as shown below.

    Baud Rate/ MCI Jumper SettingController Equivalent Setting
    Normal (2400bps)/ OpenAdvanced Comm = Off
    Advanced (9600 bps)/ ShortAdvanced Comm = On
    Baud rate setup only applicable to the RS485 connection. Normal is the default setting value.

  7. Please select the correct MCI COM No from the Comm No field.

Controller Setup

  1. Open Controller Setup. Go to Server Admin › System Device Setup › Controller.
  2. Add one controller as shown below.

  3. Please set the correct Unit No (Controller Address) and Model No.

Door Setup

  1. Open Door Setup. Go to Server Admin › System Device Setup › Door.
  2. Add one door as shown below. 


  3. Please set the Unit No to 0 as this is a single door controller.
  4. The newly added controller will be shown in the Device List. The status should be "Up".


  5. The newly added door will be shown in the Device List. The status should be "Up".


  6. You can see the transaction in the Latest All Activities List. 

  1. Run xPortal Client.
  2. Open Send Door Setting. Go to Device Comm › Send Door Setting › Select controller › Click Send All Settings.
  3. To determine the controller is up, you should noticed that the PC's icon is blinking at the top right hand side of the controllers' LED displays.
